7 Things To Know About Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure that uses lasers to target and remove unwanted hair. The procedure is safe, effective, and can be used on almost any area of the body. If you’re considering laser hair removal, there are a few things you should know. We’ve compiled a list of seven key things you should know about laser hair removal.
- How it works
First, the procedure works by targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. The laser energy is then absorbed by the melanin and converted into heat, which destroys the hair follicle. - At J SPA Medical Day Spa, the procedure is relatively painless.
For many people, laser hair removal can be uncomfortable and is often described as receiving “quick, sharp pains.” However, at J SPA Medical Day Spa, we use a special device that has a cooling tip to soothe the skin. You will feel a mild sensation, but it will not be painful. You will be able to receive the treatment without any anesthesia. However, if you are nervous about pain, it’s recommended you take an over-the-counter painkiller 30 minutes before your appointment.
- Treatments are short
Laser hair removal treatments typically only take around 30 minutes. This may vary depending on the size of the area being treated. - You will require multiple sessions.
While patients may notice that their hair is finer and less conspicuous after one treatment, they will require a multitude of treatments to receive ideal results. It is suggested that patients receive six to eight treatments to stop the hair from growing back permanently. Each treatment should occur every four to six weeks.
- You must prepare the area before you receive laser hair removal treatments.
Within the first 24 hours before your treatment, you should shave the area you wish to laser. It is advised that you do not use an electric razor as they tend to not get the hair short enough. You must not wax, pluck, or tweeze the area. Do not have any products on the area you wish to laser. This includes lotion, deodorant, makeup, and sunblock. Make sure to properly clean the area beforehand. - You cannot tan before. This includes fake tanning.
You may not be able to receive laser hair removal treatment if the area you wish to laser has been exposed to the sun within 28 days of the treatment. If you have used a fake tanner within 3 to 4 weeks, you may also be unable to laser the area.
- Your hair will need to be darker.
Because laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in the hair, it may only work on those with black or brown hair.
